The seventh annual Grand Columbian triathlon was held Saturday, September 18th in the Grand Coulee Dam area of Washington state. A total of three races were held: Half Ironman, Aquabike and an Olympic distance triathlon.

Spectators were treated to two very exciting finishes last year in both the Half Ironman distance and Olympic distance triathlons. The time difference between first and second place in the Half Ironman was less than 3 minutes. Kyle Marcotte representing team TIMEX would finish first with a time of 4:31:27. In second place was Spokane triathlete, Ben Greenfield representing team Tri-Fusion with a time of 4:34:13.

The Olympic distance race was even closer. Roger Thompson from team Tri-Fusion was first with a time of 2:03:33. Second place finisher was Joel Johnson representing team KAL RATS in 2:04:54.

Set a new PR at the 30th Troika triathlon on Sunday. I beat my time from last year by 2 minutes 24 seconds! According to my TIMEX Ironman Global Trainer, I was a 1 minute 16 seconds faster on my swim (36:44).

My bike finish time was slower than last year, about 7 minutes slower but still averaged 20 mph. The course was a little different but the distance was right on. I don’t think the course change had anything to do with my slower time. I simply wasn’t as prepared as I should have been.

I took my run average down from 10:24 minutes per mile to 9:42 minutes per mile! Unofficially I ran a 2:07:05 half marathon.

So, I finished my 8th Half Ironman in record time, 5:34:25. That’s the fasted half I’ve ever run.
