Timex iControl Ironman messes up my iPhone’s volume. What do I do?

I recently bought a Timex iControl Ironman watch and every time I plug the adapter into my device (iPhone 3G) the music volume bar disappears and the sound becomes incredibly quiet. Pressing the + and – buttons doesn’t increase nor decrease the volume. Has anyone experienced this problem?

I have an Ipod Touch (2nd gen, 32gb) and have been having the same problem! I have googled to no avail, and haven’t found anyone who has the answer. I have contacted timex, they haven’t gotten back to me yet.
